Dolphin Strandings

'Nudge'
Rough Tooth Dolphin

(Steno bredanensis)

Feb 1 -  8. 1997

Nudge stranded on
the shoals outside of Key West.

For one week we were graced
with the presence of this elder female dolphin.

Why do dolphins strand?

Today we know
that dolphins & whales
are highly sensitive to sound
in their aqua-sonic environment
They use sounds to communicate,
navigate, &  to help one another
when they are sick or injured.

Certain un-natural sound frequencies in our oceans today
can cause disorientation to marine mammals and humans.
Air spaces in the body cavity, can act like mini bombs
when sonic disturbance occurs in deeper water depths.

Assignment :

Investigate the truth about LFA Sonar?

Stranding Networks  - first response

Jan 1996…Key West  Florida
15 spotted Dolphins were seen swimming
in the shallow waters of an inter coastal channel

'Pinky'
Spotted Dolphin
(Stenella  frontalis)

In the last hours of his life, 'Pinky'
remained aware & alert to his surroundings..

Shark bitten , we ( humans)
assumed that he would be the first to die
and that he was the reason they all stranded !

Today I Wonder !
